Businesses are being told the saviour of technology is coming, computing is going to be cheaper and quicker than ever before and it’s all going to come in the form of a cloud. In fact there are many people out there who truly believe the concept of cloud computing is the best thing since sliced bread but if that’s the case you have to wonder why we’re not all on the cloud yet?
Cloud security is what’s got people so scare of placing all their computing completely on a cloud server. Cloud hosting companies are of course saying there’s nothing to fear and your data is safe. Yet this doesn’t stop the news reporting when any major website is down and of course it’s always a data center problem. Two Sundays before Christmas the Amazon site crashed for over an hour causing them a massive loss. Amazon are one of biggest cloud providers so if they can’t keep their own site online it doesn’t install much faith for everyone else? The truth is that placing all our data into a remote data center is actually very safe. Yes we’re always hearing in the news about server farms falling over and major websites being hacked but you have to put these stories into perspective. All cloud providers will have to admit to being down from time to time it’s physically impossible to never have any problems. Amazon claim to have a 99.95% uptime but this still means there are going to be down for an average four and a half hours every year and most cloud providers will quote similar stats.
As for being hacked the fire walls and security in place for virtualized servers are going to be much more high tech than anything you’re likely to have in front of your own servers.
